Top 5 WWE Rumors of the Week (July 14-18, 2026)

Another week, another batch of WWE rumors that could reshape the landscape heading into SummerSlam. From a massive title change that nobody saw coming to a Hall of Famer packing his bags, this has been one of the most eventful WWE rumors weeks of 2026. Here are the top five WWE rumors of the week ending July 18, 2026.

Nothing else this week comes close as the headline story — CM Punk’s title win may well define WWE’s entire summer. On the July 6 episode of Raw from his hometown of Chicago, Punk returned to television and immediately won the WWE championship from Sami Zayn, who had held the title for just nine days. Punk stepped in as a replacement for Cody Rhodes, who was deemed medically unfit after a sneak attack from GUNTHER earlier in the night.

This was no last-minute improvisation. Per Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, WWE had known “for a while” that Punk was returning on the July 6 Raw and “the plan” since it was set was for him to beat Zayn for the title. Meanwhile, PW Insider backed the idea of this leading to Punk vs. Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, saying it “has been discussed internally for many months.” The match that fans have been asking for all year now appears to be the confirmed direction for Minneapolis on August 1.

One of the most surprising departures of the year is now all but confirmed. Sheamus is walking away from WWE after the company reportedly tabled a reduced offer that he found insulting given his decade-plus of contributions. Fightful Select noted their sources informed them that WWE was offering Sheamus lower pay, which he felt was insulting based on the work he had put in. His original deal was reported to run until 2029, meaning something changed significantly in the relationship between the two parties.

AEW has been floated as a potential landing spot, but the reception there is reportedly complicated. According to Bryan Alvarez, there are plenty of people in AEW who aren’t thrilled at the prospect of Sheamus coming to the company — everyone likes him personally, but the feeling is the roster is already packed and screen time is limited. One person who might be intrigued about working with Sheamus is Claudio Castagnoli, and MJF also took to social media to post about Sheamus after news of his departure broke. His future remains genuinely uncertain heading into SummerSlam week.

WWE’s women’s division has been dealt a significant blow heading into SummerSlam. It was announced that Rhea Ripley won’t be able to compete at SummerSlam, so WWE is crowning an interim WWE Women’s Champion via a five-woman ladder match at the show, with qualifying matches beginning on SmackDown. Rather than vacate the title, WWE is keeping Ripley’s reign technically intact and creating an interim champion to fill the void while she recovers.

The situation adds even more pressure to an already stretched women’s division. WWE is in the midst of a tough stretch regarding its women’s division, with Liv Morgan not having defended the Women’s World Championship in an extended period and Stephanie Vaquer also having been out much longer than expected. On the positive side, WrestleVotes reports Vaquer will be back “likely around SummerSlam, the week before or at SummerSlam” — welcome news for a division that could use the reinforcements.

The free agent market is heating up with some notable names potentially heading to WWE. According to Fightful Select, Hiromu Takahashi and Richard Holliday could both be under WWE deals in the near future. Takahashi’s move to WWE has reportedly been viewed as a matter of when rather than if for some time now, and WWE’s interest in Holliday is described as serious. Richard Holliday appeared to confirm the direction himself by posting a picture at the “NXT Coffee Shop” before a GCW event where he left his boots in the ring in what appeared to be a farewell gesture.

Meanwhile, there is some thought that Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods of The New Day could be potential options for AEW following their surprising WWE departures — though as with Sheamus, the internal AEW reaction to adding more established veterans to an already packed roster is reportedly mixed at best.

WWE is pulling out all the stops for SummerSlam weekend in Minneapolis. PW Insider reports WWE is bringing in Sean Waltman, Rikishi, The Undertaker, and The Dudley Boyz for SummerSlam weekend, alongside NXT stars including Kendal Grey, Jaida Parker, Izzi Dame, Lola Vice, Mason Rook, Zaria, and Tatum Paxley. The move signals WWE treating this SummerSlam as a major tent-pole event rather than a standard premium live event.

Further down the road, Survivor Series 2026’s location is still unresolved. WrestleVotes heard WWE was considering an international location for Survivor Series 2026, but those plans fell apart. Negotiations to host the show in Boston also didn’t work out due to financial reasons. WWE is expected to announce a location before SummerSlam takes place on August 1. Also worth watching: Club WWE has reportedly been ready to launch but a “small hiccup” slowed its rollout, though WrestleVotes cautions against reading anything dramatic into the delay.
